Who was Charles Pratt?
Charles Pratt was a local benefactor of Mathern and owned land and estates within the areas of Mathern.

Charles Pratt was born during the Civil War and died in 1723 aged 79. His grave is near the east window in the churchyard of Mathern Parish Church.

History of the charity
1723
In 1723 Charles Pratt devised his freehold estate in Mathern, Monmouthshire, for the purpose of establishing a school for the children of the poor could be taught to read.
1862
In 1862 a scheme for regulating the charity was set up, by which the vicar and churchwardens of the parish became trustees of the charity.
1863
In 1863 new premises for the school were opened in the grounds of the old buildings.
1885
In 1885 the charity was first registered as Charles Pratt’s School at Mathern of Monmouth, it was administered by the Church of Wales – Diocese of Monmouth.
1936
In 1936 the Monmouth Diocesan Trust became trustee.
1962
In 1962 it was agreed that income from the trust could be used to make an annual grant to the local Sunday school and to assist with expenses of children going to secondary school.

Mathern Primary School was closed.
The Charity known as Charles Pratt's School was re-named the Charity of Charles Pratt.
2024
The Charity of Charles Pratt was re-established as a incorporated charitable organisation (ICO) under the name of Charles Pratt Educational Trust.
